Background:

I grew up outside of Richmond, Virginia and received my B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Virginia. Teaching and earning an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Oregon led to a Fulbright Fellowship, which took me to France. I married a talented Algerian French artist and happily settled in Paris until my world turned upside down when she was diagnosed with a non-small cell lung cancer that had already metastasized. After 18 months of chemo, radiation, and multiple surgeries, she died ten days after our son had turned two. A few years later, my son and I moved to Montreal and I had the good fortune of marrying another amazing woman, an Italian Canadian psychotherapist. After our daughter was born, we moved to the Greater Toronto Area to be closer to her family.

As a Certified Life Coach and Certified Grief Coach, I’m passionate about helping us recognize that we actually do have a great deal of control over our own destinies by consistently making choices that align with our intentions. I started Dwayne Thomas Coaching in part to help people cultivate awareness of when they’re giving away agency and allowing short-sighted decision-making to lead them down ever narrowing paths that they may not even realize they’ve stumbled on. My practice is based on three interdependent principles: Awareness, Reflection, Choice. The ARC.

Reason for becoming a Certified Food Over Medicine Instructor:

In 2014, my brother-in-law was diagnosed with a signet ring cell stomach cancer that took his life six weeks later. While my wife and I were searching for and finding alternative treatment options–so much has changed since my first wife was diagnosed in 1999–he opted for chemotherapy. No one can say what might have happened had he chosen a different route, but one “treatment” knocked out his compromised immune system and ushered him off to his grave.

Becoming a Certified Food Over Medicine Instructor expands what I have to offer as a coach, enabling me to add a vital piece to my practice–healthy aging educator. In addition to helping others understand the value of a whole foods plant-based lifestyle, I am excited about having evidence that I can share to help people take a critical look at the medications, procedures, screenings and treatments peddled by conventional medicine that fail to produce better health outcomes. I truly appreciate the wealth of knowledge and no nonsense approach to nutrition and health provided by Dr. Popper and Wellness Forum Health!
