Short Background:
I received a bachelor’s degree with high honors in philosophy, from the University of Florida, a Master of Divinity from Duke University, and a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University in Chicago.
I’ve enjoyed athletic activities and been health conscious – mind-body-spirit – all my life. After the birth of my son, I took up bodybuilding as my new sport/hobby. I competed as an amateur in the Pacific Amateur Athletic Union in the mid-1980s. In the late 90’s, while working out at the gym, I was asked on a couple of separate occasions, if I was available to train others. From there, I decided to empower myself to train others. For the few months between graduating from Duke and beginning the doctoral program, I became an American Council on Exercise (ACE) Certified Personal Trainer, and established a private personal training business. For the next four years, I consulted, developed fitness programs, and trained/coached individuals in their private homes and in gyms while working on my doctorate. After earning my doctorate, and while completing a post-doc as a generalist clinical psychologist in the mountains of Western North Carolina, I established a private forensic practice. The following year, I founded the Centre For Human Flourishing, PLLC. Then, after a decade of private practice in the Western North Carolina serving the underserved through the DHHS National Health Corp., I relocated to Wisconsin with my husband when he accepted a new career opportunity. That year, I founded the Centre for Human Flourishing, LLC in Milwaukee. The Centre for Human Flourishing LLC is a boutique psychology practice located in Hartland, and the Historic Third Ward, Milwaukee. I help couples and individuals learn to live, intentionally, well and flourish as human beings.
Reason for becoming a Certified Food Over Medicine Instructor:
I became a Certified Food Over Medicine Instructor because … in a word, empowerment. I have been caring for and teaching people how to properly care for themselves to achieve their life goals for 36 years, in a few roles, two of which involved conversations about food, nutrition, diet and lifestyle. Most recently, as a psychologist, I have spent many hours discussing food, diet and lifestyle choices, particularly but not exclusively with individuals preparing to undergo bariatric surgery. Becoming a Certified Food Over Medicine Instructor empowers me to empower others to come to terms with the fact that as individuals, within the natural and self-imposed limits of living, we have the capacity to choose, not only how we behave in relation to others as persons, but how we relate to ourselves, and our bodies in particular, as well. Choice implies responsibility. If we want to be healthy and happy, live well and flourish as human beings, we must inform ourselves and be willing to consider the alternatives to dairy products and animal foods, sugar and junk, pills and procedures, gimmicks and fads. I look forward to teaching others how to be well and live well by making conscious informed decisions about food.
